I Swoon over you!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decided to revive my blog - not that I have more time than before, no, I just have some new pretties to show! Last year, I was lucky enough to find Swoon Patterns, and I must say, I am loving them!! Visit the page at <a href="http://swoonpatterns.com/">http://swoonpatterns.com/</a> - you won't be sorry!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is the lovely Laney, and she's a hobo style bag. I added a small flap and snap closure - so she's not reversible as the pattern was written, but I love her just as she is! I used a gorgeous fabric that a friend of mine gave to me, and a thick yellow cotton in the centre. I embroidered the flowers on the front and the single flower on the back, as I thought it lacked something with the plain yellow. I am really pleased with her, and I'm not sure how I will part with her. When I've made a few more beautiful bags, I will be listing them on Etsy!</div>

I've only gone and won a competition!! A huge thank you to Minerva Crafts (<a href="http://www.minervacrafts.com/">http://www.minervacrafts.com</a>) for hosting such an awesome competition! Out of 224 projects submitted, mine got the most votes! I loved seeing all the projects - so many colours and designs!<br />
<br />
This is the bag that won - it's a kids messenger bag, and is made entirely from a Fat Quarter. The fabric is also from Minerva Crafts! I've sold it now, but I'll be making some more this week.<br />
<br />
I am super excited about winning, and thank you so much to everyone who voted. I'll post a picture of me with my prize when it arrives.<br />
<br />
Please visit my Facebook page: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheVeryFatQuarter">https://www.facebook.com/TheVeryFatQuarter</a> to see more bags, and more news. There are quite a few bags that I've not taken pictures of yet, but I will be doing that next week after the next round of weekend fairs. The mini lunch tote bags are also proving to be veeeery popular!<br />

I really ought to know better. 'I've no interest in making soap again' ..... a few months later, I was making soaps. 'I've no interest in sewing again' .... aaaand a few months later, I'm sewing handbags. So beware anyone if I say 'I have no interest .... ', as you never know what I might be getting up to next!<br /><br />Now, I really would LOVE to be able to make clothes, but I seem to lack the skill needed for that item. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.<br />
<br />
Here are some of the bags I've recently made for a fair coming up later this month (eep!!).<br />

Seriously. (I know, it's a surprise to me too!) I post every day for a week, then nothing for months. People think I've fallen off the edge of the world, and are readying speeches for my wake .... then I pop up again with another post. HIYA!!<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXYz7erjT1y1vg-xiaB5RJwp4aGXqaIr8ZBFgBHVGEn9T-ZSkEbyZeEsM8uwwiOxQwThjRkCKpK-m1lEutrCkIsicEYubiROIrHpkdU6E0PN0UDtLXdY-2LtNZMUq3m832CO1U_rirTzMz/s1600/Flower+02a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgXYz7erjT1y1vg-xiaB5RJwp4aGXqaIr8ZBFgBHVGEn9T-ZSkEbyZeEsM8uwwiOxQwThjRkCKpK-m1lEutrCkIsicEYubiROIrHpkdU6E0PN0UDtLXdY-2LtNZMUq3m832CO1U_rirTzMz/s320/Flower+02a.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
Thing is, I get really busy with ... well, 'stuff'. I'm making, then sorting kids, then making some more, then kids again, then tidying, then shower the kids, then kids to bed, then make some more (and a fair bit of <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheVeryFatQuarter" target="_blank">Facebook </a>in between too!) then fall into bed for a few hours, only to wake up and do it all over again. ... Sound familiar? But I love it. I love the making and my kids are great - even if they drive me batty!<br />
<br />
So, in short, I promise to post infrequently, with long intervals between, or short ones. But, I will post! So no change there then.<br /><br />You're all very welcome to join me on my <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheVeryFatQuarter" target="_blank">Facebook</a> page, I post slightly more frequently there, and I even have a few photos too!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-191855011737942679.post-41751188754467685022013-03-26T07:18:00.001-07:002013-03-26T07:19:49.089-07:00New Denim BagI feel I must start this post with an apology. It would seem I'm rubbish at this blogging malarkey. You hear from me almost every day, then nothing for weeks on end. I am sorry. Studies first stopped me from blogging, now it's just life in general.
Now, onto the making.<br />

It just cried out for something pretty on the front, and buttons seemed to be the obvious choice.<br />
<br />
There's the standard zip pocket on the inside, and two pockets on the outside. It could be reversed if desired.<br />
<br />
There's double stitching on the shoulders for extra strength, and the buttons have all been hand sewn on with invisible thread.<br />
<br />
It is machine washable, and can be ironed too.<br />

I am so sorry for not updating my blog for such a long time - I had to abandon my sewing and workroom in order to finish my studies. I did a very intensive course on Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL for short). It was AWESOME! I loved it, and got pretty good grades. But now, I'm back!! And to celebrate, I made this lovely bag. It's so big, you could almost travel overnight with it. It's made with black denim and cotton elephant fabric. No particular brand name.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEEEBjOGE5XDMkeaN2m6sOGOe6dHmmOjHHSdLgkDmIoA9gO6MdTijE9Qrxn1istfxIHLMv-TqXxBB37G993ckOKO-j48dNkJ4fMe4CggkQPYdWDlpOZdM-6dre6cZRlQZBobKhGs8j/s1600/Elephants+&+black+Denim+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEEEBjOGE5XDMkeaN2m6sOGOe6dHmmOjHHSdLgkDmIoA9gO6MdTijE9Qrxn1istfxIHLMv-TqXxBB37G993ckOKO-j48dNkJ4fMe4CggkQPYdWDlpOZdM-6dre6cZRlQZBobKhGs8j/s320/Elephants+&+black+Denim+5.jpg" width="320" /></a>I used a pair of denims, and cut them up, and used the zip for the inside zip pocket. There are also four large pocket inside, large enough for your phone or other goodies. There are two cute little pockets on the front, and a large pocket on the back. The straps are made from denim and cotton fabric. The stitching is done in the biscuit colour, and there is accent stitching on the handles and down the sides of the bag. The main bag has a very sturdy metal zip, which will keep everything secure.<br />

Now, I know that there are many, MANY tutorials out there for placemats, but ..... why not have yet another?! There are quite a lot of photos, so grab a cuppa, get comfy, and have a looksee.<br />
<br />
11 1/2" x 14" Placemat Tops<br />
11 1/2" x 14" Batting / Wadding<br />
15 1/2" x 13" Backing<br />
Rotary Cutter<br />
Cutting Mat<br />
Optional - AD505 Temporary Spray Adhesive<br />
All your usual sewing tools<br />
<br />
<b>Step One</b><br />
Make your placemat top. This can be pretty much anything you want. It can be patchwork, a single piece of fabric, or anything else you like. My tops are 11 1/2 inches x 14 inches, and include a 1/4 inch seam allowance.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifO2bJ5eEzEaNDNt9rkSip_-9WD69qk5allhX_lw12iQ-Ql5MV1R99xQMQB37rmjEKsH0c9EM97ZcF51XNYv9Skzj0Gwn2asxvdLUePDNpb8UG4mjOhYZ2_DgCC2G_9EdcgosFNKmj/s1600/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifO2bJ5eEzEaNDNt9rkSip_-9WD69qk5allhX_lw12iQ-Ql5MV1R99xQMQB37rmjEKsH0c9EM97ZcF51XNYv9Skzj0Gwn2asxvdLUePDNpb8UG4mjOhYZ2_DgCC2G_9EdcgosFNKmj/s320/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<b>Step Two</b><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, attach your batting to the top. You can use pins, but I use a temporary spray adhesive (AD505) which doesn't gum up the needle, and washes out without leaving any sticky residue. This step is optional, but, it gives the placemat a little more padding, and thus protects your table a little more.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc2fHiWNsPIABHaZ5isjyT3nb0Afqis1JfnFBJzIKCWZvYdG2oFloB3FG0QIpegEx-4EI8bDeoq4aoovzzZkgoeDGd-niQAKvaIdcpCatoFY_xltUI71rMasWZ5LVClsSY_bjrVnnN/s1600/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc2fHiWNsPIABHaZ5isjyT3nb0Afqis1JfnFBJzIKCWZvYdG2oFloB3FG0QIpegEx-4EI8bDeoq4aoovzzZkgoeDGd-niQAKvaIdcpCatoFY_xltUI71rMasWZ5LVClsSY_bjrVnnN/s320/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+02.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Three</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cut your backing fabric. This can be anything you like - patchwork (then they can be reversible) or a single piece of fabric like mine. I cut mine quite a bit bigger than the front for this tutorial, to allow for lots of movement with the sewing later. If you're more confident, you can cut yours the same size as the topper. Just remember, its easier to trim some of the fabric away, than to panic if the fabric's moved.(I speak from experience!) I cut mine 15 1/2" x 13". That was probably a little too big, but I wanted to be sure it was going to still fit afterwards!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPBRpqumZeRnmrO-KhFfRkHA33vVdj8ljY5khyY2a09PsFj_v1piOkIeniXzWmqNTguh9HUmqtjQyabe_6UXD7zWAIM9HW2tK0QC_hJq7gO_5X4F4dsYLtmoTytDt8p1zS02wPeVbi/s1600/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPBRpqumZeRnmrO-KhFfRkHA33vVdj8ljY5khyY2a09PsFj_v1piOkIeniXzWmqNTguh9HUmqtjQyabe_6UXD7zWAIM9HW2tK0QC_hJq7gO_5X4F4dsYLtmoTytDt8p1zS02wPeVbi/s320/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Four</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Take your placemat top, and place it right side <i>down</i> ontop of the backing, and pin it to the backing. (The adhesive would not work here, as you need to turn it the right way around soon.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsfughtp6bAEoqhEYMZpKzzJ7Iyfx9bBTiHC8RP8WH_yaRIABsG4NnJ5ms2H-ep6qyEr2fx-M9VVTXpq50l3-eI3oMW8zCLtWrotShuyeDUsg5OehdA1l-Gkr8AAm8VwucwcFsCWMt/s1600/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsfughtp6bAEoqhEYMZpKzzJ7Iyfx9bBTiHC8RP8WH_yaRIABsG4NnJ5ms2H-ep6qyEr2fx-M9VVTXpq50l3-eI3oMW8zCLtWrotShuyeDUsg5OehdA1l-Gkr8AAm8VwucwcFsCWMt/s320/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+04.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfwKceVZkSbntBYdZm_-OaHQBVMq9rtBgLsQNQLwPB8XN0JXfybMlHPgN_y1cvDkjTV0k0oy_3W4vY9W2s5WGxPEE9cDkzw13PMy8tksRjX7pWfbpcLrHoC8hP_dGbDhxVUYvYcV9p/s1600/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfwKceVZkSbntBYdZm_-OaHQBVMq9rtBgLsQNQLwPB8XN0JXfybMlHPgN_y1cvDkjTV0k0oy_3W4vY9W2s5WGxPEE9cDkzw13PMy8tksRjX7pWfbpcLrHoC8hP_dGbDhxVUYvYcV9p/s320/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+05.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When pinning the top use two pins to mark where you are going to leave a gap. This is where you're going to turn the mat right way round. Make sure you leave a gap a bit larger than the width of your hand.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgotUcg3025ZkNH5oXQciE0NO9h9Fct2PrfHs21FIEnHS7DNRYoBz82APH_ny3o_cBZqYFT_RWvgsG7soETGVrGNB9djDY9S5pfEcQwI09LgY-tRJ3fRNjOlTFlE_Ey1RmxGDxsDsb/s1600/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjgotUcg3025ZkNH5oXQciE0NO9h9Fct2PrfHs21FIEnHS7DNRYoBz82APH_ny3o_cBZqYFT_RWvgsG7soETGVrGNB9djDY9S5pfEcQwI09LgY-tRJ3fRNjOlTFlE_Ey1RmxGDxsDsb/s320/The+Very+Fat+Quarter+Placemat+Tutorial+06.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Five</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now, sew a 1/4 inch all the way around your mat, <i>except</i> between the two pins marking the gap. I had the batting up, so that it didn't clog up my feed dogs. When you start at the pin marking the gap, backstitch a few stitches to reinforce the area. Then, when you come back to the pin marking the gap, backstitch a few stitches again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Reach in through the gap that you left, and grab hold of the topper and batting, and pull it through the gap. Poke out all the corners, but be careful not to push too hard, as you may push through the stitches. Do not use a seam ripper for this task, as it has a very sharp point. <br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Eight</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the point that most other tutorials tell you to hand stitch the gap closed. You can do this if you like. I however have too little time for hand sewing, so I simply press the mat (it will loose some of it's fluffiness), making sure that the edges of the gap are nicely aligned, then top stitch it 1/8" all the way around the mat. Since your seam is 1/4", the 1/8" topstitch will close the gap nicely. Tie up, trim and bury all the knots and tails.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Nine</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now you need to sew a few lines across the mat. This will stop the batting from falling apart, or separating from the top. You can use any type of quilting you like. I used straight lines as it was pretty simple and fitted in with my theme. I did not sew over the burgundy strip. I sewed a 1/8" either side of it, and then the straight lines stopped at that line. Now, tie off the tails, bury and trim them as normal. Give the mat a final press to set all the stitching and give it a nice professional look.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Step Ten</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Step back, admire your gorgeous work, then make another three, or five, or as many placemats as you need. These are lovely to give as a gift, or to make for special occasions. You can match fabrics from tablecloths, other interior decor, or even use novelty fabric. Just make sure that any fabric you use, can be washed in the washing machine. Also, be aware of colours - white is not a good choice for an everyday mat, but can be used for a special occasion. Here, I've used a tea stained cotton fabric, and a strip of cotton fabric. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And that's all there is to it. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.</div>

Studies, kids, and making have all taken up a huge chunk of time. But yesterday, I finally got the camera out, and took pics of everything. ... well, <i>almost</i> everything. But here it is. I'm still very new to the whole idea of taking pics while I work, and totally forgot to take pics while I was working. Sorry. I will try to better next time.<br />Right, so grab a large cuppa, find a comfy place, and scroll on. ;-)<br />

<b>Flower Hobo Bag</b><br />
Why this is called a 'Hobo bag' is beyond me. I suppose it's because you'd probably be able to carry most of your worldly possessions around in it! LOL!! But, none the less, that's just the style's name. On this one, there are no pockets, but it is BIIIIIG on the inside. It has a lovely chunky metal zip to keep everything from falling out. It also has a handmade (by me!) glitter ribbon flower to the side.<br />

<b>Orange & Denim Handbag</b><br />This bag uses an upcycled pair of jeans, and all the leftover fabric from my <a href="http://theveryfatquarter.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/birthday-quilt.html">Mother's Birthday Quilt</a>. It is such a lovely bag, that I'm not rally sure I can part with it! It has 3 large pockets on the inside, as well as a pen pocket inbetween the two larger pocket. PLUS, it has an internal zipper pocket too, and 3 external pocket too! That's LOADS of pockets!! All of this, as well as a bag that can carry almost your whole life in it, without a sweat. A chunky metal zip keep everything from falling out the bag, and the wide straps make carrying the bag, a cinch! White decorative stitching is all over the bag too, and gives it a really special feel.</div>

I rummaged around <a href="http://pinterest.com/">Pinterest</a> for a few hours and still found nothing at all. So, I decided I'd make a tote - my own 'make it up as you go along' pattern. I cut a piece of freezer paper out and used that as the template for the base - the rest of it really was a case of making the most of what fabric was available in the size available for pockets, trims and straps. It was most enjoyable, and I love the feeling of it. The bottom is upholstery fabric, and the top shiny fabric is cotton with (I think!) a sateen finish. I also hand embroidered around the three flowers on the front of the bag with silver thread. Definitely something I'll do by <u>machine</u> next time. But here's the result. Apologies - there are no progress pic, as it was made up on the spot. But it really is your average tote, in some pretty cute fabric!<br />

But the flowers kept dying, so she changed to a fake flower. Still pretty, but I got thinking - I'm sure that I could make something pretty for her. She's such a lovely person, and I really enjoy working with her. Anyways, so I made 2 flowers. The first one below is the one I'll be giving to her. It's made of offcuts from the <a href="http://theveryfatquarter.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/birthday-quilt.html">The Birthday Quilt</a> and a beautiful button that I had in my stash. I'll be making more of these!! The second flower was an experiment to see how this technique worked, and I really enjoyed it. It worked out really well, and I'm thrilled with the results. The yellow and orange layers remind me of carnivals and music. I hope you like them too. I'll be making a whole BUNCH of these for the Christmas market at my children's school.</div>
For both flowers, a little hair clip has been attached to the bottom, but I'll be getting some crocodile clips to make them a bit more secure.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE3b1S2Ipm6OH8JTl5CIl0BgGE_k9ziN8dw22VWa_88LVNnph6ayU5lvmvgKPW0N1xvp7tv0_zVycIEXXn9si9yomtyZ4fbNAWA5lAFusmGrOeLrvW0-7YDWgnOYRZ8f8QhAkNvZdg/s1600/Cottons+%2526+bobbins+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE3b1S2Ipm6OH8JTl5CIl0BgGE_k9ziN8dw22VWa_88LVNnph6ayU5lvmvgKPW0N1xvp7tv0_zVycIEXXn9si9yomtyZ4fbNAWA5lAFusmGrOeLrvW0-7YDWgnOYRZ8f8QhAkNvZdg/s400/Cottons+%2526+bobbins+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Like many other crafters and sewers, I have a load of cotton reels and matching bobbins. But I used to store them separately - that was how it was always done. But recently, I was looking for a bobbin that matched the thread I was going to use - I knew I had a full bobbin for it, but which one was it? There were at least 5 different bobbins that looked very similar in colour, and of course, it was at night, so the light was not exactly perfect. So, the following day, I sent out on a mission to match all my threads with their bobbins. I put them into plastic bags and sealed them with a small piece of tape. Now, when I pull out a reel of thread, I know that the matching bobbin is right there with it. When I'm done with it, it goes back into the same plastic bag, ready for the next time. It keeps it clean, and easily identifiable. How do you store your cottons and bobbins? I'd love to hear about it.</div>

Well, the quilt is complete, and was given to my mother. It is a lovely quilt and she loves it. I hope she gets lots of use from it. But I thought I'd show you all what it looks like. ..... Picture overload alert!!<br />
<br />
I appliquéd a little parasol onto the quilt, and added a butterfly onto it, with invisible thread. I also stitched the flower on, so that it would be secure. It's so warm and snuggly. I also added some black & gold buttons all over it, just to add a little black to the orange.<br />

Yup. That's what <i>normal</i> people do. Those of you who know me, will know, I'm anything BUT <i>normal</i>. I pick up the book, flick through the beginners pages, slow slightly at the intermediates, then look at the advanced and say 'Yup! I want <i>that</i> one.'<br />
<br />
A week or so ago, I decided that I'd like a nice flower to go onto a quilt I'm making. Great. I searched Pintrest, and found loads of various tutorials. But they were fairly boring. So, I did my own thing. .... Of course. The tutorials called for a square of fabric. Now, never having made one of these in my life before, I set about making a half square triangle .... also a complete first for me .... and then proceeded to make the flower petals. Well, I can tell you, I was mildly surprised at how well it turned out. It's now been stitched to the quilt, and looks fabulous, if I say so myself. Pics of the quilt will be put on here soon - I'm only half way though the binding.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The quilt is a mixture of a printed fabric with oranges and yellows, and the plain orange in between. The black just helps to break the brightness up a little.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXN4_NpNOft6Td7-CoPOgz4smchD176kK9_jGPwt7cOor9PWOe_tH0x0Q0EOpdEW5ccuMCCJgUxE4_uxNsr5MHPuIdwta5uHuofogojQ0mnpc4UdfVIUjgTRdUesHJp7fCouSFsWjx/s1600/Fabric+Flower+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXN4_NpNOft6Td7-CoPOgz4smchD176kK9_jGPwt7cOor9PWOe_tH0x0Q0EOpdEW5ccuMCCJgUxE4_uxNsr5MHPuIdwta5uHuofogojQ0mnpc4UdfVIUjgTRdUesHJp7fCouSFsWjx/s320/Fabric+Flower+03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used a nice button for the centre, just to finish it off nicely.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
More pics to follow soon. </div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
PS - By the way, the 'How to ...' book I refer to on this occasion is metaphorical. I didn't even bother with an actual book - the internet is all the books, and encyclopaedias one could ever wish for. :-D</div>

URGH!! <i style="font-weight: bold;">Finally,</i> I have a new ruler and a rotary cutter (the mat is very old, but barely used). Trying to cut fabric with a scalpel and a square of cardboard (even if it IS sturdy) is anything BUT ideal. But that was what I was doing. But no more!! I now have a lovely luminous (almost!) yellow ruler and a rotary cutter that is <i>very</i> sharp. I know most others prefer a clear ruler, but I like being different. ;-) </div>

Hello!! A few days ago, I bought some a-maze-ing fabric! So, I thought I'd show them off here. I'm not sure yet how I'm going to cut them, but I just hope I do them justice!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixufRp79Jz2m5wKOrnk2C60Yc7XuMV7XSzDe5Qoy3QqmXskx4XDW8ytyJ1GpsvV3l8c1iXLNZD7NVdNhcx7Q26GZlC0Wd-T6GpXg0o3sQRl0rtvjzla_i4gY_Qdhj-LrrQ5O6ZWMqb/s1600/Fabric+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixufRp79Jz2m5wKOrnk2C60Yc7XuMV7XSzDe5Qoy3QqmXskx4XDW8ytyJ1GpsvV3l8c1iXLNZD7NVdNhcx7Q26GZlC0Wd-T6GpXg0o3sQRl0rtvjzla_i4gY_Qdhj-LrrQ5O6ZWMqb/s320/Fabric+01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The fabric on the left at the back is on a light green background, with batic yellow & green flowers. It is sooooo pretty.</div>
The fabric at the front on the left is plain blue poplin cotton, plain sage green poplin, and a tie dyed blue at the top. They're all lovely. BUT, the real show stopper, is the fabric on the right. It's been tie dyed, and the flowers have been hand painted one. There's little flecks of paint everywhere, and they're all imperfect - which makes them perfect.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A couple of close ups of the flowers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really love that when I run my hand over the fabric, I can still feel the flowers that little bit. And it also looks like they've used some mica in the paint, as there is a tiny sparkle on the petals, which doesn't show up on the pics. It's not obvious like glitter, but a far more subtle, classier sparkle. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have no idea at all how I am going to cut this up. I'm not even sure I have the heart to cut it at all! Not even the assistant at the shop had ever seen it before. I don't know whether I should fussy cut the flowers out, or if I should just ensure they're inside a block. Whichever it is, I have some gold thread coming, and I intend to highlight these beauties as much as I possibly can! I also intend to take pictures all the way of what I do - I did take The Pledge! So keep an eye out for this fabric - I just know it's going to be something very special!!</div>

When I made the pink & denim bag from the last post, I loved it so much, that I really wanted to make another, but smaller. This bag is perfect for a phone, a bunch of keys and a few tissues. I'm not sure I'd get too much more in there. But I love it. It's the same pattern as the other, but resized down again.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2KjyPLah3BT7h6PDCzDQhrKYCFnvsKjamhHg0809YdATFD4rdtrPU6XCC7gVnJS_yx-75uu_Hz-4HbP5Z9-sgW0BKkhfeVBg5lScNCAx_NseJ0SS2UCwzdu4o7TN0okRbQtgyUcJt/s1600/Bag+Front+00.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2KjyPLah3BT7h6PDCzDQhrKYCFnvsKjamhHg0809YdATFD4rdtrPU6XCC7gVnJS_yx-75uu_Hz-4HbP5Z9-sgW0BKkhfeVBg5lScNCAx_NseJ0SS2UCwzdu4o7TN0okRbQtgyUcJt/s320/Bag+Front+00.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I left the straps really long, so that it could be worn over the shoulder with ease.</div>
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The label and the zip came from an upcycled pair of jeans.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi90C5xfuNEl9_7RDpdYp0iuxcXu9smtdxzftH7jyGGXz-M3dNjdxDDY0zI_mqiFeQimIRKbRToPuLoHcolqqyp29BNdAvLg75YWEAnfDJEbqUTOD1YTLvu61xqOuLKT6yjjMXCBSyr/s1600/Back+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi90C5xfuNEl9_7RDpdYp0iuxcXu9smtdxzftH7jyGGXz-M3dNjdxDDY0zI_mqiFeQimIRKbRToPuLoHcolqqyp29BNdAvLg75YWEAnfDJEbqUTOD1YTLvu61xqOuLKT6yjjMXCBSyr/s320/Back+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I put a loop at the back - it's good if you want to hook anything onto it, but I may put this loop on the inside next time. Also, with the bag being so much smaller, I didn't bother with the secret pocket.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hope you enjoyed the pics. I'll be making another of the larger bags soon. .... It's on the list. ;-)</div>

I'll do my best to take as many pics as I can, of work in progress. I know that I don't always do things the way professional quilters and sewers do, but I am largely self taught (from quite early on!), and I kindda do what works for me.<br />
<br />
So! My next quilt will be photo progressed! ..... As soon as I've finished the one I'm currently doing.<br />

It is unfortunately the way things are at the moment for the masses. HOWEVER! There is a way around it. ... well, mostly. I had a PILE of denim jeans that had been worn out. Most were various shades of blue, and there was one black pair in there too. The first thing I made, was the handbag shown below. I used a pattern, but scaled it down quite a bit to suit me. I used all sorts from the jeans - pockets, labels, loops - just to keep the look. The rest of the jeans were used in the quilt from my previous post.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW31tGQIhYgjQlsexOV9F_WMNYbXrqcayjWmDkJYEQzFTh_ShVPpl5e6ckGyZf4A2puTcQ6TKN8rm9iRnae8y3nxEaxTFlyP6YPmexAfcRZ-nN3pxe-CdX1Mw47tcQwm4NMkvgw6Z-/s1600/DSC04136.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="249" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgW31tGQIhYgjQlsexOV9F_WMNYbXrqcayjWmDkJYEQzFTh_ShVPpl5e6ckGyZf4A2puTcQ6TKN8rm9iRnae8y3nxEaxTFlyP6YPmexAfcRZ-nN3pxe-CdX1Mw47tcQwm4NMkvgw6Z-/s320/DSC04136.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I used matching jeans pockets on the outside, and they look FAB!!<br />

The back has a small zipper pocket (will change this next time!!) and ....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihspV2ou66kucmYZjVl-6aWTt4p_J_PuTqVogzesReRqchyiBBSdg2EVJY6sKOuhQQWGNbaIw9Oc-nacIvp_Nabd6w12oKGLrOoT36681keTRuQoGZZ-cyb1gLCBYH1uEx1nlBIKKg/s1600/DSC04141.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihspV2ou66kucmYZjVl-6aWTt4p_J_PuTqVogzesReRqchyiBBSdg2EVJY6sKOuhQQWGNbaIw9Oc-nacIvp_Nabd6w12oKGLrOoT36681keTRuQoGZZ-cyb1gLCBYH1uEx1nlBIKKg/s320/DSC04141.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
a <i><b>secret</b></i> pocket too! It's tough velcro, so a very safe spot for anything you want to keep accessible.<br />
The straps were simple too - one side is pink strapping, and the other side is a strip of the pink fabric. It means that the straps stay put, and don't roll, and look good at the same time.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwK2YFpATk9VCidssFpt507HC9ZVnwp6OkeGigz-FpB0mjiD-DHzNXM02vrDOi-4whnGr184vWjimcCbYf4DcQ-gNY1i_i9QlqP61OfWNY0w6v8JaeDr6frvTIYJrgVLyUV7JHLhyX/s1600/DSC04143.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwK2YFpATk9VCidssFpt507HC9ZVnwp6OkeGigz-FpB0mjiD-DHzNXM02vrDOi-4whnGr184vWjimcCbYf4DcQ-gNY1i_i9QlqP61OfWNY0w6v8JaeDr6frvTIYJrgVLyUV7JHLhyX/s320/DSC04143.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Pockets on the inside - I changed the sizes to suit my needs. But they're great, and don't flap open, so things don't fall out of them. The lining is white cotton. All the fabrics mean that it's totally washable, and fairly easy to keep clean.<br />
<br />
It's a BIG bag. It's big enough for me to put all the kids stuff in when we're going out for the morning, or I can put my camera in it, with all the lenses, and other 'stuff', and still have space for my lunch. A great bag!!<br />
The larger size (the unchanged pattern) would be perfect for an overnight bag. I will definitely be making one of these again some time soon!<br />

This is a new blog, where I can share a little about one of my hobbies. I may post loads in a one month, then nothing for ages after that. Either way, keep an eye out for new posts and pictures.<br />
<br />
To kick the blog off, I've some pictures of a scrappy raggedy quilt I made a little while ago. All the denim squares are upcycled from old jeans, there's a few squares of stripy fabric, and there's loads of character added with the pockets, loops and labels. Some of the labels were taken from the jeans, others were stolen off of shirts my husband still wears. But they looked great, and I knew they'd be great on the quilt. It has a plain white backing. It is so snugly, I had to prise it away from the family to get pics - even the cat has tried to claim it as her own!<br />
<br />
Prepare for a LOTTA pics.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The full quilt is a single bed size - huge for my first ever quilt!</div>

I cut some of the blocks on the seams of the jeans for extra character, and added green buttons that said Levi Jeans. - Not that I ever owned a pair of Levis!<span style="background-color: white;"> </span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I added 4 pockets - each are different, and face in different directions. Fun for the kids to put their hands in, or to hide secret notes. </div>
